Functional medicine is a patient-centered, science-based approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of disease, rather than solely treating symptoms. It views the body as an interconnected system, recognizing that imbalances in one area can significantly impact overall health.
Key principles of functional medicine include:
Root Cause Focus: Instead of asking, "What disease does this patient have?", it asks, "Why does this patient have these symptoms?" Multiple factors—including genetics, environment, lifestyle, and nutrition—are considered to understand the underlying causes of illness.
Personalized Care: Treatment is tailored to the individual, acknowledging that people with the same condition can have different underlying causes and, therefore, require different approaches.
Whole-Body Approach: Functional medicine perceives the body as an integrated system, understanding that dysfunction in one organ system can influence others.
Prevention-Oriented: By identifying early warning signs and addressing imbalances before they manifest as disease, functional medicine emphasizes long-term health and well-being.
Collaborative Care: Practitioners frequently collaborate with conventional medical providers, utilizing advanced lab testing, lifestyle modifications, nutrition, supplements, and, when necessary, medications to support healing.
